I got off to a good start making my own contribution to earn my bicycle. I feel that to accept the generosity of Bike & Build in starting me off with a brand new bike, I should personally commit to contributing the minimum amount to earn my bike. I also began with writing letters to my friends and family. However, as I began thinking about all of these important people in my life, asking them for money suddenly seemed very wrong. To be truly honest, most of my friends and family would benefit from affordable housing services. Many of them are low-income and probably pay over 30% of their income to housing costs already. How could I possibly expect them to donate comfortably when they need to save every penny?
So I changed my tactics. Instead of soliciting voluntary donations, I will earn $4,500 through acts of services and goods that I can provide - including selling my art work! Even if my friends and family can not easily give $10 to charity, perhaps buying a loaf of banana bread or allowing me to paint their living room will make the spending more economical for them. I know I'm being optimistic and I realize most of the time, I will pretty much break even - but what I think this comes down to is that it is simply in my character. Have you ever heard of the five Love Languages? They are words of affirmation, acts of services, gifting, quality time, and physical touch. When it comes to expressing love for me, acts of services and quality time are my languages of choice. So if nothing else, I want to show the people in my life that I love them and I appreciate their support.
Check out this document of goods and services that I can provide. I'd love to give one of them to you in exchange for a contribution to Bike & Build:
